Frank McAvennie in Rangers dig as Celtic hero claims Ibrox board have already spent Champions League money – Glasgow Live

Frank McAvennie has taken a barbed dig at the Rangers board – claiming they have ‘already spent’ their Champions League income before they have even reached the competition.

The Ibrox side lost their third qualifying round first leg to Malmo in Sweden and need a big performance in Glasgow on Tuesday night to reach the playoff.

They are yet to spend a transfer fee on a player this summer despite adding John Lundstram, Fashion Sakala and Nnamdi Ofoborh to Steven Gerrard‘s squad.

But despite that, Celtic hero McAvennie reckons they are banking on the payday they will get if they qualify for the Champions League proper – believed to be worth around £12million.

Because he thinks they’ve already spent that amount in preparing to defend their title.

He told Football Insider ahead of the Malmo clash: “The pressure is really on now.

“Knowing the Rangers board, they have probably spent the group stage money already.

“I think they had an eye on tonight’s game when playing Dundee but they should have still won.

“Rangers will be a different proposition tonight I’m sure. They just didn’t perform at the weekend.

“They need to start well so the crowd don’t get on their back.

“It’s a hard task but I think they will win. It would be a disaster if they lost.”
