I’ve been training bushcraft, survival, and wilderness skills for years now. Bow drill and hand drill are two of my favorite fire starting methods but every time you see it in a book or instructional there’s this idea that they’re simple techniques anyone can do. Laying them out without discussion of properties of the woods to be used, the nuances of how the various parts should be carved, and by showing the spindle for the bow drill on the wrong side of the bow string just sets people up for failure.
