Arsenals Martin Odegaard transfer alternative has been revealed – and its not James Maddison – Football.London

Arsenal have three weeks to bolster their first-team squad further.

So far this summer, the Gunners have spent just over £70million on three new additions in Nuno Tavares from Benfica, Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht and Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion.

But Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu’s business is not done yet as there are still many holes in the Spaniard’s squad that must be addressed over the next 21 days.

As reported by football.london , the Gunners pair are targeting at least three more signings before the summer transfer window closes on August 31.

One of which is a creative midfielder.

Martin Odegaard has been linked with a return to the Emirates Stadium after spending the second half of last season on loan, and according to 90min, talks are continuing with Real Madrid over a permanent deal.

In addition, and perhaps most interestingly is the report states that Philippe Coutinho remains of significant interest to the Gunners.

That would suggest that the Brazilian is regarded as the alternative to Odegaard – and not Leicester City’s James Maddison.

football.london revealed last month that Arteta is an admirer of the attacking midfielder and will target him this summer, with a source close to Maddison confirming that the 24-year-old is ‘at the top of the list’ for Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

With that said, football.london has been told that negotiations are ‘very slow’ and ‘like a game of chess’ but Maddison remains keen on a move to north London.

The transfer window is in full swing and things are beginning to ramp up with Edu and Mikel Arteta’s dealings at the Emirates.

The major sticking point regarding this deal is Leicester’s demands of more than £60m.

As a result, it is understood that Edu is exploring cheaper options in the market in the event that a deal cannot be completed before the August 31 deadline.

Could Coutinho be the solution?

Given Barcelona’s financial problems which saw them make the decision to release Lionel Messi on a free transfer last week, it is possible that Coutinho will be available at a cheaper price this summer.
